How Winter can be a healing time

Where I live Winter is setting in. Last week we had about 4 inches of snow and the last couple of days have seen cold frosty nights.

Indeed Winter is a time of going within not only physically but also emotionally, spiritually, mentally...

When I lived in the monastery we set aside 2 months in the Winter for retreat time. Work projects stopped, there was no external communication by email or phone and we spent long periods in silence - up to 10 days at a time.

I did find it a challenging time on one level - having to face what I had been running from internally and being in silence for so long but it was also nice to stop. Indeed it is still a practice I have continued to this day. Every so often I will head out to the woods on my own for an hour or a few days to be in silence and to collect my thoughts.

And this is my message to you today as we near the shortest day of the year. The message that it is always really important to take time to be still, to still the moving mind and settle the joustled heart. Whether it be in a silent room or in a woodland Winter can indeed be a healing time.

For in these times on retreat we remember...
We remember what is important to us...
We remember a sense of perspective and clarity...
We remember the vigour and nourishment that a period of silent reflection gives...
We remember that we are worthy...

And it was in a time of retreat that I wrote my first book, The Well Being Way.
