Meditation is the cornerstone of stress management. What is so great about meditation and how do you do it?




Meditation and meditation techniques have been used for thousands of years to relax the body and relieve stress. If you look at most religions worldwide then you will find some element of meditation within their practice.

Personally when I have a challenging day with a lot of stress meditation is the first thing I turn to. I sit down at the end of the day and practice the various meditation techniques that I have learned.

Why?

Meditating is like exercise for the mind. If you want to have a fit and healthy mind then learning how to still the mind is the the best form of mental exercise. How does it help relieve stress?



How Meditation Can Relieve Stress

For me meditation calms my mind and helps to put things into perspective. When I have lost clarity then this practice helps me to gain clarity back. If I feel stress then sitting silently, watching the breath helps to balance this out.

When I was working in a corporate environment I found that the days where I meditated went so much more smoothly and were relatively stress free. And during this time I learned many tips about meditation for stress management to use in a busy and stressful life.

But I found on the other hand, that when I didn’t meditate the days were more challenging and I would be quicker to rise to negative emotions.

I learned to do visualization meditations, stress relief meditations and meditation techniques. These meditation techniques really helped me to enter into a calm state while I was at work or later on at home, unwinding from the day.

About Meditation

Meditation has been around for a long, long time. Yogis, Buddhists and lots of other spiritual groups have been using meditation as a form of stress management for over 2,500 years.

Stress meditation

The Buddha himself taught meditation as a way of relaxing, going within oneself and of calming the mind 2,500 years ago in India.

Still to this day Buddhist monks across the globe teach meditation to the masses.

Christians and many other societies around the world have also been using meditation as a form of stress relief and contemplation for a long time.



What is meditation?

Meditation is so special for stress management because it works. Scientists have carried out many experiments about meditation over the years and the results have been very positive.

Meditation allows the mind to go into an "alpha" state. This is the same state that we enter when we are in a deep sleep. Therefore a ten minute meditation is as good if not better than 10 minutes deep sleep.

One testimony to the usefulness of this practice is that it has been around for thousands of years and is still being practiced as we speak.

Meditation is also excellent for getting to sleep. By meditating for 5-10 minutes or longer if you have time is an excellent way of switching the mind off and allowing you to drift off to sleep quickly.

When I am personally teaching about stress meditation is the first tool that I give to people. And this technique has given the greatest results to those I have trained.

But the trick with any stress management technique is to try it out for yourself and see how it helps or affects you.
