Jan 30, Winter Stress

Something seems to happen after Xmas and New Year.

The big build up and excitement of Xmas is over. Suddenly we feel low. We feel like there is nothing to look forward to and stress starts to build in our lives.

The days seems so short, the weather sets in and life gets really boring... Or at least it seems that way.

So how can we deal with Winter Stress and Winter Blues?

Here is a list of things we can do to help ourselves:

1. Get outside for a walk each day. Even if it is raining - get some waterproofs on. Get some fresh air and some natural light.

It makes such a difference. Not only does our body get the light it needs but also get some exercise! Two birds with one stone.

2. Turn the TV off and read a book. I find that watching TV in winter takes me into a really dark space. I start to live my life through soap operas, and seeing as they are pretty miserable, I become miserable.

Find a really positive author, like Paulo Coelho or Richard Bach. See how your moods and stress levels change with what you put into your mind.

3. Spend some time in the woods or in nature. Feel the peace and quiet that winter has. Feel this period of inner reflection and go inside yourself.

What are your desires and needs - fulfill them.

4. Be kind to yourself. Winter is a tough time for a lot of us so be extra careful. Don't take on too much or burn yourself out. Realise that you don't have to do so much.

Be kind.

So I hope that these reflections help to give you some guidance about Winter Stress and that you start to see the light of Spring on the horizon.

Be well,

Dec 31, For a Stress Free New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is billed as the biggest party of the year.

But for how many of us is New Year's Eve one of the most stressful nights of the year?

I know that for myself I never used to enjoy the New Year's celebration. I felt such a pressure on myself to get drunk and 'enjoy' myself.

I used to pass out before midnight or go and hide in a corner because I felt so depressed.

The truth was that I never felt like I fitted in with this type of celebration.

The first time I really enjoyed New Year was when I was living in a Buddhist monastery.

The first year felt so strange because it had been so many years since I had been sober at New Year. But it felt wonderful.

I kept having to pinch myself because it felt so amazing to be sober and having fun!

I was sober, with friends and really being kind to myself.

We had a routine in the monastery where the abbot would give a talk which was followed by a period where we could spend time chatting with friends.

During this time we were asked to reflect on the year which had just passed.

We were told to write on one sheet of paper all the things we wished to be forgiven for and all those people we wished to forgive.

On a second piece of paper we were asked to write all the things we aspired to for the coming new year. What was it we wanted, what qualities in ourselves did we want to develop and what did we want to achieve?

Each person then took turns in burning the first piece of paper in an urn and the second piece of paper was placed on the altar.

I found this to be such a beautiful way to spend new year. Coming inwards and searching for our own happiness rather than looking outside.

For inside is where the heart is, where we can solve our stresses & strains and learn how to relieve stress. What a beautiful way to start the year.

Stress relief really comes down to us taking responsibility for ourselves. It is about learning what stresses us and learning to change how we react to it.

So if New Year's Eve is stressful make changes.

Get some friends together, spend some time meditating, nourishing each other, build a fire, cook a beautiful meal and love yourself.

Do what you want to do rather than fulfilling the expectations of others and you will find this will be a wonderful foundation to build this new beautiful year on.

May you all have a beautiful new year!

Happy New Year!

Dec 30, Xmas & Holiday Stress

Merry Xmas!

For many of us Xmas can be a very stressful period of time.

There can be a great expectation on us to be happy, to enjoy ourselves and have fun.

But being around our families for such a prolonged and intense period of time doesn't always make us feel this way!

What I want to say today is that if you are feeling stressed out over the holiday period, you are not the only one - so don't give yourself a hard time.

Society tries to make us feel that we 'should' be a certain way. But for many of us, we have worked hard over the 12 months and all we want is to have a break and a good sleep.

So give yourself what you need this Xmas. Rest, walk, exercise, eat well, sleep well, do the family thing - but don't overdo it. Be nice to yourself this holiday.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year
